The collection now known as the Brandenburg Concertos was something of a calling card for JS Bach. Having been asked by the Margrave of Brandenburg to send several of his compositions after a chance encounter in Berlin, and being in search of a post more suitable to his abilities and ambitions than the court at Köthen, the composer must have meant for the collection to be a kind of CV. How else to explain the formal diversity of the set and its variety of instrumental combinations?
