According to the Bible and the visions of John of Patmos, seven trumpets will sound, one after another, to herald the impending Apocalypse. In anticipation of the end of the world, M.I.A. utilizes this myth as the bedrock for M.I.7.—her seventh album, naturally—a record imbued with a quasi-divine gaze that feels as though it were crafted outside of time itself. It is an imposing disc with a production built on a sense of sonic majesty, fitting seamlessly into her existing discography: dominant drums, martial tones, choral chants, and atmospheres gathered from the four corners of the globe—specifically Sri Lanka and India—through samples and high-pitched vocals.
Throughout the album, M.I.A. rails against the established order and the deceitful elite. Having long fought this battle through calls for awakening and unity, she does so this time—as she has since the pandemic—through a need for spiritual elevation and a refocus on the individual. This gives M.I.7. a visionary quality, in every sense of the word, carrying that touch of megalomania that has always made its creator such a unique figure in the global musical landscape.
