While it was quickly overshadowed by the punchier, punkier alternative trends of the ’90s , shoegaze experienced a true renaissance about 15 years ago. This revival, sparked by a new generation of bands, eventually paved the way for the genre’s pioneers to return to the spotlight—most notably Slowdive, who emerged from a 20-year silence in 2014. Reverb-drenched guitars and hushed, whispered vocals are the core ingredients deary has embraced for their debut album, Birding, after refining their sound through a series of 2023 releases. While the young British trio—consisting of Dottie Cockram, Ben Easton, and Harry Catchpole—isn’t necessarily reinventing the wheel, they have certainly mastered the craft.
The seven-minute “Alfie,” with its mid-track surge in guitar intensity, could almost justify the album’s existence on its own. Yet Birding offers plenty of other ethereal moments that effortlessly transport the listener, such as “Baby’s Breath,” “Gypsophila,” and “Terra Fable,” while deftly weaving in elements of pop (“No Sweeter Feeling”), indie (“Alma”), and even folk (“Garden of Eden.”) deary has perfectly synthesized their influences to deliver a sound that is uniquely theirs while paying tribute to a timeless corner of indie music. It is an immersive record and an incredibly successful debut.
