Arelean Brown’s sole full-length album from 1977, “Sings the Blues in the Loop,” is being reissued on CD for the first time by Red Lightnin’ in 2025. A Mississippi native who became a prominent figure in the Chicago scene, Brown combined rural roots with urban energy, creating a unique fusion of blues, funk, and soul. Originally released on the obscure Black Magic label and closely tied to the history of the independent Bea & Baby Records studio, the record has long been considered a collector’s rarity.
Backed by The Outhouse Band, the singer demonstrates powerful, unfiltered vocals ranging from defiant irony to deep tragedy. The remastering restores this authentic document of the 1970s era, previously available only to a select circle of vinyl collectors at high prices. This release reaffirms Arelean Brown’s status as an outstanding vocalist who did not merely perform but lived every note of her songs.
