“Tirakat” is a collaborative album by the Jakarta-based trio Ali and Lebanese multi-instrumentalist Charif Megarbane, rooted in the long-standing cultural exchange between Indonesia and the Arab world. Transcending the conventional “fusion” label, the project offers an organic blend of 1970s Indonesian psychedelic funk, disco, and Arabic melodic structures. The title, derived from the Javanese practice linked to the Arabic “tariqa” (path), emphasizes the importance of spiritual discipline and an intuition-led recording process. The record illustrates how Western instrumentation can be recontextualized through Eastern sensibilities to create a seamless, trans-regional sonic landscape.
